Why BallotBox exists
Civic information is abundant and fragmented. Our work is to make it local, understandable, and usable without asking people to trust a black box.
Mission
BallotBox exists to make participation in democracy easier, clearer, and more actionable. We build trusted civic infrastructure that turns complex public information into reliable, local, human-centered tools, so people can understand who represents them, what matters in their community, and how to take part.
Vision
A civic ecosystem in which trustworthy public information is local, understandable, and actionable.
Operating principles
Public trust is a product requirement.
Trust is not a marketing posture; it is a constraint we design against. If a feature cannot be explained, sourced, and audited, it does not ship. We treat credibility as a measurable property of the product surface.
Provenance before prediction.
We show people where information came from before we attempt to interpret it. Derived and modeled values are labeled distinctly and never dressed up as official record.
Privacy and security by design.
Civic tools handle sensitive context — where someone lives, what they care about, how they participate. We minimize collection, scope access tightly, and treat security review as part of ordinary delivery.
Accessibility is infrastructure.
Public information that only some people can use is not public. Contrast, keyboard operation, semantics, and reduced-motion support are baseline engineering work.
Humans remain accountable.
Automation accelerates the work; it does not absorb the responsibility. Named people own data quality, publication decisions, and correction paths.
Maryland first, built to scale responsibly
Maryland is our proving ground. Working in one state lets us verify district resolution, official sources, and data provenance against records we can actually check, with local accountability for what we publish.
Our architecture is designed so additional jurisdictions can be added deliberately, one governed dataset at a time. That is future scaffolding — not a claim of current nationwide coverage. We will describe coverage only where it has been validated.
